AMERICAN HAMBURGER
- 1.5kg ground beef
- ¼ tsp salt
- ½ tsp ground black pepper
- 3 tbs barbecue sauce
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- 225g bacon, cut into ¼ inch pieces
- 1 onion medium, finely chopped
- ¾ cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 6 hamburger rolls, split
- Lettuce and sliced tomato to serve
- In a large mixing bowl, mix together the ground beef, salt, black pepper, barbecue sauce and garlic powder using your hands. Taking a small handful at a time (approximately 115g), shape into 12 patties. Lay patties out on a cookie sheet and cover with plastic wrap, then refrigerate.
- Place bacon in a large fry pan and cook over medium-high heat until evenly brown (approximately 5 minutes.) Remove bacon from pan with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Turn the heat down to medium and pan-fry the onions in the remaining bacon drippings until soft and translucent – do not brown. Mix together onions and bacon in a small bowl.
- Preheat a barbecue, grill or large fry pan on medium heat.
- As the grill heats, remove beef patties out of the refrigerator; top 6 of the patties with 1- 1/2 tablespoons of the bacon and onion mixture each, and sprinkle with shredded cheese. Top each with one of the remaining patties and press the edges together to seal. Lightly brush the burger patties with oil before placing on BBQ or grill.
- Grill or pan fry the stuffed, sealed patties until cooked through, 2 to 3 minutes per side, turning once. The burgers are cook when the inside temperature of the burger reaches 75°C with an instant read thermometer.
- Serve on hamburger buns with condiments of your choice.
